RAMBLE ON… is now available at Kobo, Barnes & Noble and Apple Itunes

I’m very excited to let readers of my novels know that my latest eBook - RAMBLE ON… is now available at additional vendors.

The three month exclusive offering to Amazon Kindle for RAMBLE ON… is now over and I’m pleased to have been able to republish my latest eBook at 3 other major eBook vendors.

Ramble On… - is a story of one young man’s experiences in the world of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll.

Here’s a brief synopsis:
Jack Clark believes he has everything that a man could want. A supermodel wife, access to a huge fortune and a blossoming career as a writer. But he’s a flawed man, wracked with guilt and dependent about drugs and alcohol. His past is about to catch up to him, a past he felt he had buried and left behind forever.
In the spring of 1983 Jessie Cayne rolled into El Paso, Texas on his vintage Harley. Jessie is an army brat, a high school football star and a small time drug dealer. He’s comes into the new town with lofty ambitions -he’s long on talent, but short of cash. He quickly joins the city’s best high school football team - the RIO GRANDE CONQUISTADORS and begins to traffic drugs for the local narcotics cartel to the wealthy students of his new school. Jessie’s game plan is a simple one - win a State football championship, earn a scholarship to an Ivy League school and leave his days of poverty behind. This plan goes off the tracks when he becomes friends with the wealthy, enigmatic and tortured Moby McIntyre. He becomes embroiled with the gorgeous love child Mary and is then seduced by a crazy sexual predator. He appears destined for fame and greatness until he is seduced by the three things he loves the most - SEX, DRUGS, and ROCK ‘n’ ROLL.

I have suggested a Rock n Roll soundtrack to be played as the book is read.

DAMN I WISH I WROTE THAT!

Part one - TV shows & Movies

Have you ever stopped to wonder who wrote that fantastic movie or TV show that you just watched? Sure, they’re name was in the credits. But I’m willing to bet you know who the actors were, and maybe who directed it, but who wrote it? I’ll bet you have no idea who was the creative party behind that fabulous film or TV show. If they didn't write it, you couldn't watch it.

First I have to thank DJ - Jim Mitchell from Q107 for the idea for this blog post. Kim regularly has a spot on his radio show where he will play a song that he wishes he had written; therefore this blog is dedicated to things I wish I had written.  These are all pieces of writing that are just damn exquisite, eloquent and intriguing. As musicians are inspired by other musicians, these are pieces of writing that inspire me. In some cases it’s a specific scene, in others it’s the entire series, episode or film.

So here it is- DAMN I WISH I WROTE THAT -part 1

1      THE USUAL SUSPECTS: Film, 1985 written by Christopher McQuarrie. A truly superb movie, my favorite scene is the moment when Customs agent Dave Kujan looks up and realizes that he has been duped!- Who actually is Keyser Söze?

CASABLANCA: Film 1942, screenplay by Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein, and Howard Koch - A nearly perfect example of screen writing. There’s an example of some classic dialogue:
Captain Renault:What in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca?
Rick: “My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters.
Captain Renault: The waters? What waters? We're in the desert.
     Rick: I was misinformed.

PLANET OF THE APES: Film 1968, screenplay by Michael Wilson and Rod Serling. Based upon the novel La Planète des singes by Pierre Boulle, Another ground breaking story. The most gripping scene is at the film’s end when Taylor and Nova have escaped from the apes and are ridding on horseback through the surf on a deserted beach. There they come across the remains of the Statue of Liberty which is half submerged in the surf. Just an incredible piece of writing.

GAME OF THRONES: TV show, written by George R.R. Martin. - Seasons 1-4 brilliant in every way. Particularly good are the Death of Ned Stark, The Crown of Gold, the death of Kal Drogo and the birth of dragons, the Ed Wedding and the final climax between Tyrion, Shae and Tywin.

LOST: TV show, 2004, Season 1, episode 2, written by Jeffrey Lieber, J. J. Abrams & Damon Lindelof - That sublime and eerie moment when we realize that Locke had been confined to a wheelchair prior to the crash. Possibly the best moment in the entire series.

MAN OF STEEL: Film 2013, written by David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan. - I just love the moment when Clark Kent’s father stands and sacrifices himself to the tornado in order to preserve his son’s secret identity. I get goose bumps every time I see this incredible scene.

MASH : Season 3, episode 24, written by Everret Greenbaum & Jim Fritzell.- This was in general a very well written TV series. The shocking death of Lt. Colonel Henry Blake was perhaps it’s greatest moment. Does TV writing get any better than this?

BREAKING BAD: TV show, 2008-2013 Season 1, episode 1, Season 4, episode 13, written by Vince Gilligan. Walter driving down the desert road in the meth RV is possibly the very best opening sequence in any TV show- ever. In the season 4 finale Walter’s final solution for Drug kingpin Gustavo Fring- brilliant, unexpected and explosive.

The Duellists: Film 1977, written by Joseph Conrad (Based upon his short story- THE DUEL) & Gerald Vaughan-Hughes. Most people have never heard of this great film. A gripping tale of honor and dueling during the Napoleonic era. Just superb in every aspect.

STAR WARS- Return of the Jedi: Film 1983, written by Lawrence Kasdan & George Lucas -“ Luke, I am your father.” Movie magic.

THE SIXTH SENSE: Film 1999, written by M.Night Shyamalan. One of the greatest screenplays of all time. “I see dead people.” Chilling dialogue.

HILL STREET BLUES: TV show 1982, Season 2, episode 11- Freedom’s Last Stand. Written by Michael Kozo & Steven Bocho. This episode made me cry!

4 OUT OF 5 STARS - for RAMBLE ON...

Here's another positive review for RAMBLE ON...   4 OUT OF 5 STARS

BY JENNIFER CAMERON-SMITH

The story opens with a middle-aged man, an apparently accomplished writer, having to tell the story of his youth during a twenty-four hour period. All will become clear to the reader towards the end of the story that then unfolds.

This is one man’s story of a life in the fast lane: drugs, sex and rock and roll. Jessie Cayne is a tough kid. Both of his parents have problems, but it’s his father Jessie lives with. And life in the Army means moving frequently, making it hard for Jessie to put down roots but probably an advantage given his involvement in drug-trafficking. So, in the spring of 1983 Jessie and his father move to El Paso. Jessie rides in on his vintage Harley and meets up with Moby McIntyre, the rich boy whose father has a lot of influence around town. Because of his football skill, Jessie quickly joins El Paso’s best high school football team (the Rio Grande Conquistadors). He equally quickly hooks up with the local drug cartel and starts selling drugs to the wealthy kids in his new school. Jessie has a straightforward plan: win a State football championship, earn a scholarship to one of the Ivy League schools and leave poverty behind. Can Jessie achieve his ambitions?

In many ways, while believable, Jessie is immature and unlikeable. Yes, he’s had a tough life and it’s easy to feel some sympathy for him but his choices seem to be made with little thought of the consequences.

‘This was one of those forks in the road moments, one choice leads to a long happy life, the other choice leads to ruin.’

And then, everything starts to go wrong. Jessie lets down his girlfriend Mary, falls foul of Moby, and loses his home and his job. Like a house of cards, Jessie’s plan for the future comes tumbling down. By the end of the story, I felt disappointed by Jessie. He did not appear to have any insight into his behaviour and situation. So this is a story about actions and activity rather than reflection and change. Jessie the man is no more self-aware than Jessie the teenager.

This is an interesting novel, and while I liked the inclusion of song titles and bands (I’m a big Led Zeppelin fan as well), Jessie’s life as a play list didn’t totally appeal to me. The story kept me engaged (a little like watching a train wreck in slow motion) and if reading about drugs, sex and rock and roll appeals, then you may well enjoy ‘Ramble On’.

‘Ramble on, ramble on, ramble on.’

Note: I was offered, and accepted, a copy of this novel for review purposes.

RAMBLE ON,,,, THE 2ND REVIEW

Here's another review of RAMBLE ON...

By: Carol Piner- author of EVIDENCE OF INSANITY

Ramble on by John R. Stuart is an extremely well structured book that has everything but your tub thrown in it. First let me mention Stuart's characterization...it's awesome. He is an absolute master with his descriptive style. Whether it is the weather, his motorcycle, his favorite music, a character or a place on the map. All the while, his easy, breezy style allows you to read some very ugly transactions and make them seem normal.

Even though his book began with him living with a filthy rich wife, he had achieved his own fame as a writer. Because he was  overtly promiscuous, he gets tossed on his now very broke butt by the powerful family he had thumbed his nose at. However, he felt his drug connections would create any necessary funds as he became the pro football player he had his sights on. Given all that, off he went on his much loved Harley for new life in El Paso.

Introduced to his new buddy, Moby, he went about achieving his ambitions. His acceptance by Moby allowed him to run with the "in" crowd and introduced him around where he was allowed to indulge in his favorite things, women, drugs and rock and roll. He then ran into serious trouble by going too far with another powerful family, which seemed to be an issue with him.

Apparently Stuart is an aficionado by of hard rock. He introduced songs that related to the chapter sunk by well known singers such as Lynard Skynard at the beginning of each chapter. His music preferences do not go quite as far as punk rock but definitely bring back fond memories for those of us who lived through that era. His love for this music and his Harley appeared to be the "rocks" of his life and was front and center throughout his book.

I did get lost a few times when the on-going action changed quickly. Suffice it to say, he let his deficiencies, including never knowing when to quit, caring about what people he cares for need and his never-ending promiscuity bring him to a cataclysmic
decision.

Whew! I love when that happens. It wore me out just reading it. But again, his ability to draw a picture with his writing is an art and I sure hope he continues with it. John R. Stuart is a master story teller who needs only minor polishing.

The First Review - RAMBLE ON...

Great to see the first review of my ebook RAMBLE ON... posted to Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/RAMBLE-JOHN-R-STUART-ebook/dp/B00JNCKEW0/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1398785826&sr=1-1&keywords=ramble+on...

Sex, Drugs & Rock 'N' Roll, review by Nathan Beauchamp

RAMBLE ON... promises a story saturated with sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll and boy does it deliver on all counts! This is a hard-edged, hard-hitting story about a tough kid making his way in the world as a high school athlete, part-time drug dealer, and ladies' man. Jessie Cayne isn't your typical protagonist--he's not shy about his views on drug use, his womanizing ways, or his violations of the law. He's a Harley riding bad boy. Unrepentant, and at times, unlikable.

That's the biggest two-edged sword in RAMBLE ON.... Jessie Cayne will probably rub some folks the wrong way. He strays toward unlikable because of his rampant drug use, views about women, and strong ambivalence for the law. Personally, I didn't mind him as I don't think protagonists all have to be cut from the same cloth. Especially considering author John Stuart goes to great lengths to show Jessie's troubled youth, his absentee / control freak father, his gambling addict mother, and the sort of life imposed on him as an Army Brat. Jessie IS believable. Very believable. But he's not the sort of protagonist that many will like or relate to.

Jessie does have a tragic plot arc, which is also realistic for his character. I give the author major credit for making that aspect of his story realistic. You can't live like Jessie (who ironically shares a first name with another pop culture drug dealer icon, Jessie Pinkman from BREAKING BAD) without suffering some consequences, and Jessie definitely does suffer some major consequences.

From a plot standpoint, Stuart uses a pretty advanced story telling model--that of a "nested" story. Basically the story starts with Jessie as an accomplished middle-aged writer, who because of plot complications, must recount his sordid youth in an act of binge writing over a twenty-four hour period. That's a very interesting setup, though I did feel it took a bit too long to develop, a bit too long to get to the main thrust of the story, Jessie's time in high school.

Jessie hasn't changed much from high school to now, and except for at a few points in the last few chapters of the book, seems to have about the same beliefs and attitudes that he did in his youth. In real life, people rarely change that much--at least not easily or without a ton of work. In stories, characters are expected to have "arcs" that make them "round." They are changed by circumstances, choices they make, and relationships with others.

Jessie is realistic in the sense that he's the same dude in middle age as he was in high school. But I wanted to see him reflecting on his past in a more adult way. At one point he does talk about how stupid and selfish he was in high school, but overall his retelling of his past feels far more like an idealized high school experience saturated with fast cars, fast women, and a never-ending drug and booze supply. He's absent the sort of self-reflection that would make him more likable. That's okay, as I said, people in real life don't often change much, but it would have made the story palatable to more readers if he was reflective and was different now vs. the past.

That leads to the other major weakness in the story: for the middle third of the book, Jessie pretty much gets what he wants without much effort or risk on his part. He doesn't have real obstacles in his path. He gets connected to a Mexican drug cartel, lands a starting position on the football team, makes friends with the local millionaire's son, and lands his love interest Mary (who of course is the most beautiful woman ever) all without much trouble. Things are far too easy for him. Only Mary takes some effort on his part, but their interactions are more physical than emotional. It takes a lot of time for Mary to start to look like a character comprised by more than "hungry buns" and tits.

When the action finally does really start to rise in the last third of the book, it's pretty great. A nice love triangle, a bit of THE GREAT GATSBY thrown in, Jimmy Dean references, car crashes, legal situations, high school hijinks--the book becomes VERY entertaining. It's that middle third that lost me, mainly because other than getting high and bedding Mary, I wasn't sure what the hell Jessie really wanted or what was stopping him from getting it.

The information Stuart builds into the story about the way drug dealing works (or worked in the 80s) is compelling, interesting, and believable. I enjoyed reading those parts of the story as there's nothing better than giving the reader the chance to feel smart--like they're learning something new, and (for me at least) from a different world than the one they occupy.

The writing in RAMBLE ON... is really pretty clean, pretty decent. This isn't your typical self-published title overflowing with sentences that don't make sense or major grammar issues. The book clips along, is easy to read, and while it does have a few typos, it isn't distracting. Kudos to Stuart for hiring an editor or being a pretty darned good copy editor himself.

Stuart also uses musical references throughout the book. Chapters are each headed with a song title and band name that have something to do with what takes place in that chapter. They're also sprinkled through the chapters themselves, a bit too frequently at times. The connection between song title and the action gets tangential here and there. I do LOVE the way the songs work to ground the story in place and time. They work much the way the TV show COLD CASE employed music to create mood and atmosphere as well as set the time for the story being told. I could hear INXS's "Never Tear Us Apart" and LED ZEPPELIN's "What Is and What Should Never Be," and "Taking Care of Business" by BACHMAN TURNER OVERDRIVE playing in my head just by reading the song titles. Those cultural touchstones enhance the story and were one of my favorite aspects of craft.

Stuart goes out of his way to provide detailed histories for a number of his characters. However, they're more "showing than telling" and while interesting, read like biography more than compelling scenes. The worst offender comes right at the climactic action of the book, right when crap is about to REALLY hit the fan for Jessie. We get a long (though interesting) history for a love interest that stalls the story out at a point where it should be accelerating. It's not that this material has no value, more that its timing slows me down when I should be speeding up.

Overall, RAMBLE ON... does what it promises: gives the reader a gritty, real, and honest portrayal of a "Dark Passenger," as Dexter would say. The story had some terrific elements, and I like the bravery of picking an unlikable protagonist for the novel. I found the ending satisfying, and the final third of the book moves with a brisk pace that I wish was present in the middle third. This isn't a perfect book, but it does entertain, and I suspect that its target demographic (men in their thirties to fifties is my guess) will love it.

Recommended for those that like gritty stories of Sex, Drugs, and Rock 'N' Roll.

4:20 Theme, Ebook - RAMBLE ON...

Happy 4:20 day

4:20, 420, 4/20 or four twenty.

No matter how you say it, today is 4:20 cannabis day, the day when the counterculture world celebrates the use of marijuana.

The concept of the 4:20 world was a theme that I used in my latest eBook, RAMBLE ON - a tale of Sex, Drugs, Rock N Roll and Murder. I consciously scheduled my book to be published at Amazon to be available for this holiday.

RAMBLE ON... - A BOOK WITH A RECOMMENDED SOUNDTRACK

I believe I have offered readers of my new eBook a new and rather interesting option. My latest novel, RAMBLE ON..., is a story of Sex, Drugs, Rock N Roll and Murder.

http://www.amazon.com/RAMBLE-JOHN-R-STUART-ebook/dp/B00JNCKEW0/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1397874746&sr=1-1&keywords=ramble+on...

I discovered that as I was writing the book I could hear a soundtrack of classic rock songs playing in my mind. It was a rather eerie experience and most of the music I could hear as I wrote was helping to set the mood of the story and became an integral component of the storytelling experience.

For example, while I was writing the opening of the book I could clearly hear the Guns N Roses song PARADISE CITY, and it just seemed so appropriate to the experience of the story that I decided to make these song choices part of the reading experience.

This experience continued as I wrote the novel. Ultimately, there are approximately 65 songs recommended to make the reading experience more tangible, more all encompassing. Since anyone reading RAMBLE ON, will be doing so on an electronic eReader of some sort, it will be possible for them to access the appropriate song via the internet and play the song as they read. I believe this will make the book much more total and absorbing reading experience.

As far as I am aware, this is a first in the world of books! Has anyone ever recommended a soundtrack to be played as a book is read? If so, I have been unable to find it. So sit back enjoy the book and ROCK ON!

RAMBLE ON… Exclusive to AMAZON KINDLE

Well, I'm very excited to have just published my latest eBook, RAMBLE ON…

RAMBLE ON is a story of Sex, Drugs, Rock n Roll, and Murder set in El Paso, Texas in 1983.

Exclusively at: Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JNCKEW0

There’s a new drug dealer in town. In the spring of 1983 Jessie Cayne rolled into El Paso, Texas on his vintage Harley. Jessie is an army brat, a high school football star and a small time drug dealer. He’s comes to a new town with lofty ambitions -he’s long on talent, but short of cash. He quickly joins the city’s best high school football team - the RIO GRANDE CONQUISTADORS and begins to traffic drugs to the wealthy students of his new school for the local narcotics cartel.

After a great deal of deliberation I have decided to publish this novel exclusively at AMAZON.

While this will limit the exposure of the novel, it will also consolidate sales to the one vendor, and since my Amazon sales of my other two novels are nearly all at AMAZON it seemed fitting to go where the sales are.
Should I see a need to expand the availability to other vendors such as KOBO or Barnes & Noble, then I’ll re-evaluate that decision.

RAMBLE ON... 1st Draft Completed

Well, I just realized that it's been a while since my last blog post. I was lost in my work on my newest novel.

Back in the summer, after I finished writing REBELS & DESPERADOS, a friend asked me what was next. I answered- book three in my alternate history series REBEL EMPIRE. He suggested it was time to perhaps try another genre, let my creative wings open, fly a little and try something completely different.

The result is RAMBLE ON....SEX, DRUGS, ROCK ‘n’ ROLL…MURDER.

Very pleased to say I just completed the first draft and I'm about to start the re-writes and editing, looking to be finished by mid summer.

Here's the working cover by the talented Patricio Lahman;
